Choosing A College Or University: Does Accreditation Matter?

Now that you have decided to pursue a higher education, it is time to think about schools. Do you want to attend a large urban university or a small specialized college? Will you be a full-time, part-time, or virtual student? Are you shooting for a top tier school or does distance learning appeal to you?

All students have different answers to each of these questions. Your answers will help you find the school that best suits your educational needs and career goals. There is, however, one question that has only one answer—Does accreditation matter?

The answer, of course, is yes. Accreditation means that the institution has been independently reviewed by an accreditation agency. This agency studies the educational programs offered by the school to determine if they are uniform in consistency and quality. Accreditation is recognized by employers, professional associations, and other colleges and universities. This is particularly important for students who plan to transfer credits, pursue a higher degree at another school, or use their degree as proof of employability.

When considering schools, it is important that students understand the type of accreditation required in their field of study. It is also important that they verify accreditation before applying for admission. Ask if the school is accredited and by whom. In the United States, the Council for Higher Education (CHEA) oversees the accrediting agency and lists them on their website, www.chea.org. Some of those agencies include:

• Middle States Association (MSA)
• Northwest Association of Schools & Colleges (NASC)
• North Central Association of Colleges & Schools (NCA)
• New England Association of Schools & Colleges (NEASC)
• Southern Association of Colleges & Schools (SACS)
• Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC)
• Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges & Schools (ACICS)
• Distance Education & Training Council (DETC)
