Advertising (AS)
AS
From magazines and newspapers to billboards and the Web, advertising is everywhere. It is an industry of ideas that informs, inspires, and entertains. Advertising is dynamic-it is constantly searching for new ways to reach the masses and innovate design and the written word. A sharp advertising mind must be able to think like a business marketer and a consumer, an analyst and an artist.
Students begin with a foundation in color and design, photographic imaging, graphics, and layout. The program continues with studies in marketing and addresses business issues and industry concerns facing advertising agencies. Students learn basic Web site and publication design and study animation for multimedia. As part of their course work, all students complete an internship and create a portfolio to show prospective employers.
Unlike other schools that traditionally offer advertising classes through a business or journalism department, the program at The Art Institute of California - San Diego provides a solid art and design foundation combined with hands-on courses in the business and marketing side of advertising. Students learn software appropriate to their program of study, including QuarkXPress, Dreamweaver, Flash, and a range of Adobe products.
With a solid foundation in both the design and business sides of advertising, graduates are prepared for entry-level positions with advertising agencies, design studios, marketing firms, corporate and retail marketing departments, and production companies. Entry-level positions include account executive, advertising artist, graphic artist or designer, junior media buyer, and marketing support assistant.
