Should You Get a Fashion Design Education?
In the movies, someone who wants to get into fashion simply moves to New York City, gets a job as a secretary at some fashion magazine and, over the course of a year or two of hard work, gets discovered. In real life, it doesn't work that way. If you want to get a real job in fashion (not a secretary or mail clerk), then you need to get a fashion design education.
Fashion companies have many requests for people looking for jobs and there just aren't enough jobs there. So, if you are serious about getting a job in fashion and living the life that you see in the movies, then you had better walk into that interview with both a portfolio of your work and a diploma in your hand.
Because fashion is more than just about hiring someone who is stylish, companies need to see that you can sew, that you know tailoring, that you can make a pattern, or drape fabric. They need to know that you understand all the computer programs that they use, and that you understand the business side of fashion. Just looking good is not enough.
A fashion design education at an accredited college or university is the best way to ensure that you can get a higher level job in the fashion industry when you graduate. If you want to be a designer, a tailor, a fashion photographer, or run your own fashion company, you will need to have a lot of education and experience under your belt before you start looking for a job. A fashion design education can really help you to achieve this.
