Degree Modes
An accounting degree gives students a broad understanding of the fundamental principles of accounting. Coursework includes an in depth study of budget analysis, investment planning, taxation, and auditing. A student who completes an undergraduate degree in accounting may go on to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). Likewise, individuals who choose to pursue a MBA in accounting qualify for these designations, as well as qualifying for upper level and senior management positions.
A CPA typically works for an accounting firm or is self-employed. As a financial professional, a CPA provides a variety of services to the general public including auditing, accounting, tax advisory, and litigation assistance. A CMA delivers similar services, but works for an employer, as does a CIA who functions strictly in an auditing capacity. Each of these designations requires a BS or BA in accounting and a satisfactory score on the requisite professional examination.
