Preserving Your Sanity When Returning to School

Say you’re returning to school as an adult. You have a career, a family, and numerous responsibilities outside of school.

One of the most common mistakes people make in this situation is to enroll in too many classes. Essentially, they over-extend themselves right off the bat. This can cause a person to feel overwhelmed, run into budgeting problems, and often give up their educational pursuits entirely, because they are under the illusion that they don’t have the time or money to complete their educational goals.

Rather than taking a full schedule of classes, try taking one or two to start, then ramping up your schooling as you adjust to your new lifestyle. By slowly easing into your new study and class schedule, you will avoid burnout and absorb more of the class material. It will also help you gauge how many classes you can take at once while staying sane and keeping up with your other commitments.

Many people think that taking a full schedule of classes is the only way to reach their goals in a reasonable amount of time. However, it’s often better to work toward your degree at your own pace, rather than overwhelm yourself by trying to rush through your schooling.

Starting small will pay off. Even if it takes a little longer to complete your degree, you will have enjoyed your education much more, and preserved your sanity.

Good luck and happy studying!
