Doctoral degrees are specialized degrees required for professionals in various fields including medicine, law, and business.
The Doctoral degree is the highest degree awarded in the United States. There are three types of Doctoral degrees: research, professional, and honorary. A Doctor of Philosophy or Ph. D. is a research degree and can be obtained in any field of study. There are Ph.D. degrees in art, education, business, engineering, science, and humanities. These degrees require a minimum of three years of study and are awarded for scholarly research that contributes to the body of human knowledge. This research is submitted and defended with a doctoral dissertation.
Like the Ph.D., professional doctorates also require a minimum of three years of study after receiving a Master’s Degree. Instead of research, however, these students concentrate on the practicalities of their field. Professional doctorates are awarded to individuals who study music, ministry, law, and medicine.
In addition to these two degrees, colleges and universities can award Honorary doctorates to any individual they feel has made a significant contribution to a field of study. This contribution need not be research based or academic in nature.
