A degree in special education prepares students for the most diverse teaching position available. Every special education student is different, as is his or her optimum learning environment. Therefore, in addition to being patient and compassionate, special education teachers must be flexible.

Most special education majors complete general education related coursework the first two years of undergraduate school. They then move on to take classes in psychology, child development, and the education of students with disabilities. Most individuals begin teaching with an undergraduate degree, but continue their education and study on the graduate and doctorate levels.
