What to Look for when Choosing a Nursing School

Does it make you feel good to help other people? Do you take great pride in putting a smile on a child’s face when they are sick and feeling bad? If you do, then nursing may be the career path you want to pursue, but there are a lot of decisions that need to be made before deciding which nursing program is right for you.

Different nursing schools offer different areas of study in nursing such as a nursing assistant or aide may be offered by many schools but the school itself may not have an internship program with a large hospital that would offer extended hands-on practice in other field choices such as pediatrics. When determining if a nursing school is right for you it is important to consider the location. A small school located within range of several large hospitals will give you a more hands on learning experience in a variety of different nursing careers. There are many pros to being at a small school around large hospitals such as more one on one learning and hands on experience. If one of the larger hospitals focuses on cardiac care this would be a good school if you are interested in becoming a cardiac nurse. Check out the specializations of the hospitals surrounding the schools you’re considering.

Another key factor to choosing a nursing school is the accreditation or ranking of the school. While a lot more people are choosing online classes over going to a college campus, many of the online schools are not accredited in all states or facilities. So for instance if you want to take an online class that is located in but you live in Michigan then you need to check within the state that you live in and the area or facility that you would like to work in as some hospitals and medical settings will not recognize an online school.

There are hundreds of nursing schools out there from traditional campus based schools to online degree programs. Always do your research to find which one is right for you. Look at the location, accreditation, clinical hours and where internships are offered. All of these will help you determine which nursing school is the right one for you.
