College Drinking; More Than Just a Problem – Visualized
The team at DegreeScout.com was pretty shocked when these statistics surfaced about life at traditional colleges and universities. Even with the funny stick men, it is still unnerving.
At first glance, it seems strange to draw the conclusion that attending a traditional college can dramatically up one’s chances of being assaulted, committing suicide, driving drunk or having a penchant for graffiti. It made us wonder: Do career colleges and online programs shield students from these unfortunate scenarios? Or is the spike in crime and drinking simply a product of youth, in which case, traditional colleges just house a large population of young (and arguably irresponsible) students?
What do you think? Can these situations be avoided by enrolling in online education courses?

Party on!
Wow, did a beer bottle kill this persons family?
I do agree with a lot of this. Although why does it seem that they make the girls out to be the victims of it in all the scenes? As if girls don’t drink at college. And especially how the guy is relaxing with his arms up and the girl with ? ? ? ? ? around her head. wtf seriously did a woman write this crap? damn sexist.
And why is weed not legal? Dumbass alcoholics.
The credibility of this information is lacking in so many ways.
Nice little slant on unprotected sex btw. The bastard male is enjoying some post-coital time relaxing while the poor innocent female is stressed wondering what she may been given while she was being violated. Because we all know females are simply the victims of STDs, never the carrier. Women never initiate or consent to unprotected sex. LOL. How ridiculous … time to push the buzzer on this nonsense and have a drink!
and it’s all worth it

That’s it. I’m not letting any daughter I ever have go to college.

For anyone who went to college – is any of this surprising?

As far as infographics go, that was not very well executed.

Something about a cartoon suicide makes it look extra disturbing.

Cartoon rape isn’t as funny as the name sounds, at least in this instance…maybe it’s the broken heart graphic?

I’m going to reply to both of these.

I agree. There were the week long party kids who skipped all classes and promptly failed out. There were the black out drinkers who were always falling down and getting hurt or arrested for pissing in public. The weekend binge drinkers who fit the description of functional alcoholics (more than 8 drinks in a sitting? shit, a few rounds of beer pong before heading to the bars to do 10 shots qualifies for that). And of course the female equivalents of all the above. I don’t really personally know of any sexual assault types – but on more than one occasion there were drunk hook ups where either the boy or the girl was astounded to wake up and find out they had done the deed with the other. I hope illegal shenanigans wasn’t involved in those; or in mine – but whatever. Tl;dr Alcohol is a helluva drug.

It’s not so much the college drinking that is the problem, as much as the drinking on the whole. These same figures apply to just about every age group. How many adults get arrested for, sexual assault, assault in general, DUI, public disturbances etc? For anyone that would use this as anyone who would use this as an argument against college drinking, i’d tell them to stop being such a puritan hypocrite.

As long as getting laid is a likely consequence, college students will continue drinking.

Shocking and depressing numbers.

I think it should be understood that all college students want to do is have the best 4 years of their life regardless if they remember their nights, get in to a dilemma or have a crazy learning experience.

Because people who don’t go to college completely abstain from drugs and alcohol. No, no wait, some of them are the biggest alcohol abusers I know.

about 5 percent are involved with police or campus security. Slight differnece bewtween those two. Also, how do any of these compare to non-college students?

Love how they slip in "or drugs" in some of those.

I read through and mentally replaced all the numbers with zero and substituted alcohol for pot.

It’s a rare infographic that presents the data more clearly than an article with a few charts, tables, and graphs.

Though I’d imagine the rates for many of those things are higher for most US college-aged people since most people in that age range are just learning how to cope with easy access to alcohol and many have not learned how to use it responsibly. Though, as you point out, many people never learn that :(

I don’t know why this is generalized toward students, this graphic could be used for the entire population… except "academic problems" of course.
