A degree in public administration prepares students to serve the public in a variety of capacities. This includes writing funding grants, developing social programs, setting public policy, and managing finances. These skills are utilized by both the public and private sectors. Therefore, public administrators can be found in most any work environment—from government to healthcare to non-profit organizations.
Public administrators often have varied educational backgrounds. Students can earn a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate degree in public administration. They can also pursue a specialized undergraduate degree and a graduate degree in public administration, which prepares them to work in a specific industry. Either way, students receive a well rounded education that includes courses in public administration, policy formation, program development, grant writing, public finance, and human resources.
