Sociology is the study of human behavior within an organizational structure. Sociologists observe how humans interact in a variety of settings to determine which social, religious, and legal trends influence behavior. They then record and analyze this data to be used by a variety of industries and organizations. This includes business, corrections, education, politics, public relations, and law enforcement.
Students pursuing a degree in sociology study social problems, criminal behavior, statistical analysis, social deviance, social theory, race, and ethnicity. Students can also take specialized classes in the sociology of business, politics, or education; urban sociology; and social psychology. This course of study helps students develop research, writing, analytical and critical thinking, organizational, and managerial skills.
