With a post-recessionary economic environment, many American’s are re-thinking their jobs. Some have been laid-off or furloughed during the financial downturn and are using the time to embark upon a career they are passionate about.

For adult learners, deciding to change careers often means that they need to take additional college courses in their new industry, or for some, get a degree, period!

With this noble goal in mind, many hardworking Americans have their hopes dashed as soon as they realize the costs of college are incongruous with their earnings, and even the national inflation rate!

According to recently released reports from the College Board, in the school year of 2009-2010, most students and their families can expect to pay, on average, from $172 to $1,096 more than last year for this year’s tuition and fees, depending on the type of college.

That’s just plain out of reach for most of us.

The good news is there is more than $168 billion in financial aid available. And, despite all of these college price increases, a college education remains an affordable choice for most families, as there are many institutions that don’t have the $35,000 a year sticker shock!

Another thing to consider is what amount of tuition is covered under government loans. For many students, the low-interest rate government loans don’t cover the entire amount, forcing them to get additional private loans, with hefty APR’s.
